Artist - The Dynamics
Make That Change
Genre: R&B/Soul
ALBUM REVIEW by K. Harris
The Dynamics is the type of band that doesn't fit nicely into one neat
category. Instead, they fit nicely into a few categories. If you like
R&B, you'll like their style.
If you like Funk, you'll like their groove. If you like the Blues,
you'll like their sway. Right from the first track, you can hear
the influences of such great artists as George Clinton, James Brown,
and B.B. King. The opening track, I Want You, gives it to you
J.B style, with B.B undertones. However, the title track,
Make That Change, has more of a Funk flavor to it, as does the track,
Shuck and Jive. The Dynamics excel at providing a steady groove,
while holding on to the mood of the melody. Whether they dub in
the occasional electric guitar, or the sharp sounds of a
trombone/trumpet blend, they provide an enjoyable experience
through and through. If you like a steady bass groove, the track,
Turn the Knob, is for you. For those of you, though, looking for
more of a mellow, rock you slowly back and forth type song, go
straight to the song, Wondering. It's so well polished, I had
to hear again…and again, and I'm not exaggerating one bit.
The first time I heard, Love Lessons, I couldn't help but
think of Cameo. The track is sung in that certain Cameo way,
which I must say was a pleasant surprise. To hear a group
incorporate such a style, once again, supports The Dynamics'
diverse sound. If you've recently had your heart broken
and you're looking for that one song to fill the empty void,
skip to, I know You're At Home; it can do wonders.
All in all, The Dynamics prove that the oldies aren't just
necessarily the goodies, but they are still alive and kicking.
To hear a band blend styles so well, is a compliment in
and of itself. However, if the individual pieces don't come
together, it can sound devastating. Not the case here.
If you've haven't heard The Dynamics yet, you've haven't
heard one the best of its kind. Do yourself a favor
and don't wait another minute.
